Pea Gravel Project Details

Enter the area dimensions and planned pea gravel depth. Results update automatically.

Pea gravel weight can vary by stone size, moisture and supplier. Adjust the tons-per-yard value using your supplier's information when available.

How much pea gravel do I need?

Measure the length and width of the area, then multiply those measurements by the planned pea gravel depth. The calculator converts the result into cubic feet, cubic yards and cubic meters and can add extra material for spreading, settling and uneven ground.

How to Use the Pea Gravel Calculator

1

Measure the area

Measure the length and width of the space you want to cover.

2

Enter gravel depth

Choose the planned depth of the pea gravel layer.

3

Add extra material

Use the waste allowance for spreading, settling and uneven areas.

4

Check the estimate

Review cubic yards, tons, bags and estimated material cost.

Pea Gravel Volume Formula

For a rectangular area, calculate volume by multiplying length, width and gravel depth.

Length × Width × Depth = Volume

When measurements are in feet and inches, divide the gravel depth in inches by 12 before calculating cubic feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 to convert the result to cubic yards.

Pea Gravel Calculation Example

For a 15 ft × 8 ft area with a 2 inch pea gravel depth:

2 inches ÷ 12 = 0.167 ft

15 × 8 × 0.167 ≈ 20 cubic feet

20 ÷ 27 ≈ 0.74 cubic yards

With 10% extra ≈ 0.81 cubic yards

Common Pea Gravel Depths

The correct depth depends on the project, base preparation and site conditions. These are general planning examples, not structural requirements.

Decorative garden areasOften about 2 in
Walking pathsOften about 2–3 in
Patio surface areasOften about 2–3 in
Deeper fill areasDepends on project

Pea Gravel Bags vs Bulk Delivery

Bagged pea gravel can be convenient for small areas, touch-ups and garden projects. Larger projects may require many bags, so bulk material sold by cubic yard or by weight may be easier to manage. Compare the quantity and supplier pricing before ordering.

Why Pea Gravel Weight Can Vary

The weight of pea gravel can vary because of stone size, moisture, material composition and supplier specifications. The calculator therefore lets you adjust the estimated tons per cubic yard rather than relying on one fixed value.

Pea Gravel Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate how much pea gravel I need?+

Multiply the length, width and planned depth of the area to calculate volume. Convert the result to cubic yards if your supplier sells pea gravel by the yard.

How many cubic feet are in one cubic yard?+

One cubic yard contains exactly 27 cubic feet.

How many bags of pea gravel do I need?+

Enter the volume covered by one bag. The calculator divides the total required volume by the bag volume and rounds up to the next whole bag.

How many tons of pea gravel do I need?+

The calculator estimates tons by multiplying the required cubic yards by the tons-per-cubic-yard value you enter. Supplier-specific weight information should be used when available.

Should I order extra pea gravel?+

Some extra material can help account for uneven ground, spreading, settling and measurement differences. Use the adjustable waste allowance to include extra material.

Can I use this calculator for paths and patios?+

Yes. It can estimate pea gravel for rectangular paths, patios, garden areas and similar landscaping projects.
