Your pool cost inputs

Example values are illustrative, not US averages. Replace them with your actual costs for meaningful results.

1. Pool and pump

Use your equipment label and utility bill when possible.

Used for cost-per-1,000-gallon context; it does not secretly change your entered bills.

Enter actual power draw, not horsepower. 800 watts = 0.8 kW.

2. Water and DIY supplies

Use your receipts or choose your own planning assumptions.

Enter combined water and sewer charges where applicable.

3. Professional service and annual costs

Use the actual quote and check what is included so costs are not counted twice.

How this pool cost estimate works

Pump energy is estimated as pump power in kilowatts multiplied by daily running hours and average days in an open month. That energy use is multiplied by your electricity price per kilowatt-hour. Water cost equals monthly gallons added divided by 1,000, then multiplied by the water price per 1,000 gallons.

During open months, DIY costs include electricity, water, chemicals and supplies. Professional costs include your service quote and any chemicals or supplies not covered by it. Both add the annual repair reserve and opening or closing budget you provide.

Annual cost = (open-month running costs × months open) + annual repairs reserve + annual opening/closing budget.

Example: pump electricity

Suppose a pump draws 0.8 kW, operates 8 hours per day, and power costs $0.18 per kWh. Using 365.25 ÷ 12 ≈ 30.44 days per average month, estimated pump energy is 194.8 kWh per open month and its electricity cost is about $35.06 per open month.

This is an arithmetic illustration, not a typical pool tariff, measured pump performance, or a location-specific price quote. For an accurate personal estimate, replace every sample input with actual meter readings, invoices and local rates.

What changes your maintenance budget?

Pool operating season

A pool operated all year has more running-cost months than one closed for part of the year. Seasonal opening and closing work may add a separate annual bill.

Pump use and local tariffs

Pump power, run time and electricity price directly affect estimated energy costs. Heater energy is not included unless you add its cost to your own budget separately.

What your service plan covers

Two quotes can appear similar but cover different tasks and chemicals. Compare them on the same basis before treating the difference as savings.

Pool maintenance cost FAQ

How much does pool maintenance cost per month?

It depends on local electricity and water rates, pump run time, chemicals, season length, equipment repairs and whether you pay for professional service. This calculator uses your inputs instead of claiming one national average.

Does the estimate include pool installation or major renovations?

No. It estimates ongoing ownership costs. The repair reserve is an amount you choose; installation, resurfacing and other major renovations are not automatically included.

Does professional pool service include chemicals?

It depends on the provider and service plan. Check your actual quote and use the checkboxes to indicate whether the quoted monthly service price includes chemicals and cleaning supplies.

What does an active-month cost mean?

This is the cost during a month when you operate the pool. The annual average divides the full estimated annual cost by 12, even if the pool is open fewer than 12 months.
