Deck Stain Project Details

Enter the deck dimensions and product coverage. Results update automatically.

Product coverage varies with wood condition, porosity, application method and stain type. Use the coverage listed by the stain manufacturer whenever possible.

How much deck stain do I need?

Multiply deck length by deck width to calculate the main surface area. Add any extra surface area for stairs, railings or other wood surfaces. Multiply by the number of coats, add a waste allowance and divide by the product coverage rate.

How to Use the Deck Stain Calculator

1

Measure your deck

Enter the deck length and width.

2

Add extra surfaces

Include stairs, railings or other wood surfaces that will be stained.

3

Enter coats and coverage

Use the number of coats and the coverage printed on your stain product.

4

Check quantity and cost

Review gallons or liters, containers required and estimated cost.

Deck Stain Formula

Start with the total surface area that will receive stain.

Deck Area + Additional Area = Total Surface Area

Then multiply by the number of coats, add waste and divide by product coverage.

Adjusted Area ÷ Product Coverage = Stain Required

Deck Stain Calculation Example

For a 20 ft × 12 ft deck plus 40 ft² of extra surfaces:

20 × 12 = 240 ft²

240 + 40 = 280 ft²

Two coats = 560 ft²

With 10% extra = 616 ft²

At 250 ft² per gallon ≈ 2.46 gallons

What Changes Deck Stain Coverage?

Wood conditionDry or weathered wood may absorb more
Wood speciesPorosity varies by wood type
Product typeCoverage varies by stain or sealer
Application methodBrush, roller or sprayer can differ
Number of coatsMore coats require more material
Surface textureRough wood can require more stain

Should Railings and Stairs Be Included?

Yes, if you plan to stain them. Railings, stair treads, risers and exposed deck edges add surface area that is not included in the simple deck length × width calculation. Use the additional-area field to include these surfaces.

One Coat vs Two Coats

The number of coats depends on the stain product, wood condition and manufacturer instructions. Enter the number of coats required by the product you plan to use. The calculator multiplies the total surface area by that number.

Deck Stain Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate deck stain quantity?+

Calculate the deck surface area, add any extra surfaces, multiply by the number of coats, add a waste allowance and divide by the stain manufacturer's coverage rate.

Should I include railings and stairs?+

Yes, if they will be stained. Enter their estimated surface area in the additional-area field.

Why does stain coverage vary?+

Coverage can change because of wood porosity, surface condition, stain type and application method. Use the coverage stated by your product manufacturer whenever possible.

Should I buy extra deck stain?+

A small extra allowance can help cover absorption differences, application losses and touch-ups. The calculator includes an adjustable waste allowance.

Can I calculate multiple coats?+

Yes. Enter the number of coats required and the calculator multiplies the total surface area accordingly.

Can I calculate liters instead of gallons?+

Yes. Switch the calculator to metric mode to enter dimensions in meters and product coverage in square meters per liter.
